23 things kansas week 4

So I am skipping the week 3 assignment for now and moving on to week 4. This weeks assignment was to look at photo sharing sites, the recommended site being flicker. Scrolling through the images and photo albums on flicker I was amazed at what people are willing to share with the world. There were personal shots, candids, photos of pets and the random squirrel. The most interesting album that I found was a black and white album full of pictures of women on the street. These are candid shots, however the photographer did get pictures of women staring directly into the camera. The range of emotion in these pictures range from hostile to bemused to serene. I was really impressed by this album and his ability to capture moment in the lives of strangers. However, unfortunately I seem to have lost that link.

This one is funny too

23 Things Kansas Assignment #2

The Assignment for this week of 23 things Kansas was to choose a social networking site and then use it. This choice was easy, facebook of course! I have been a member of facebook since 2005. I got an account as a freshman in college as an easier way to get to know people from my classes. As facebook progressed it morphed into a tool that once was intended as a social networking site for college students to what it is now. My grandparents, aunts and uncles now have facebook profiles so I can stay in touch with family as well as friends that I would have otherwise lost contact with if it were not for facebook.

Facebook has become the most popular social networking site. Because of its widespread use, I see a facebook site for the library being very useful. People usually check their facebook as often if not more often then their email. A facebook site would allow them to see updates on library activities without having to go to the library's homepage. It could also connect them with other library patrons via fan pages. Facebook could also be a vehicle for starting book clubs for patrons that have similar interests but otherwise would not have known one another.

Facebook is a wonderful time waster, procrastination tool, and an overall cure for boredom. Althought, facebook does have its downfalls. Sometimes I feel that people feel like they can share things with all their friends over facebook that they would have not even told their best friend in person. People often share too many personal details, angsty moods, and it is an outlet for random thoughts that usually are neither funny nor insightful. Social networking allows people freedom in sharing what they want to with their friends and family, but I feel that some people take it a bit too far.

This is the first time i have created a blog, therefore the first time that I have had to force myself to come up with daily tidbits of semi- interesting thoughts/ramblings. I might try again later on that interesting thought thing...
